We all admire laptops and fancy owning one at given periods of our lives. Our society today has embraced the use of laptops so much that no one wants to be left behind. However, there are known negative effects of laptops.
As the name suggest, laptops were built to be used on our laps and their selling point to this date is their portability to this effect. Our focus today is different from what the laptops were supposed to achieve because they do just that. We already love them and probably own one or fancy having one is the not so distant future. But before you buy that laptop you crave for. It is of great concern that you know the possible risks it can bring to your health.
I have three potential hazards that are associated with long term use of laptops
#1. Musculoskeletal pain and injury
This emanates from any strenuous activity you subject your body to endure. Laptops can be quite uncomfortable in this respect. You probably find yourself learning more towards your laptops screen putting your body in a very compromising position. Your neck muscles grow tired and you find yourself twitching your neck muscles to find some temporary relief.
But do you stop there?
Often we find ourselves pushing our muscles to the limit. This should not be the case. Damage to our ligaments and tendons can led to other general pain to our body. By damaging the muscles to our necks we may end up destroying the very core that helps us stay upright.
⇒ We can avoid the pain to our necks and spine by using our laptops in a comfortable set up. The temptation to use the laptops while resting on our beds should be avoided.
⇒ invest in a good chair and ensure the laptop doesn’t rest on your lap but on a desk with good height on it level with your head.
⇒ take regular breaks to stretch and for relief if you feel your neck muscles are beginning to cramp.
Another common negative effects of laptops is common eye disorder also known as nearsightedness. A person who suffers from myopia will have a challenge seeing objects that are distant. Such objects appear blurry and only come in focus when the objects are nearer.
Myopia can be inherent, and if this is the case, then spending long hours on your laptop screen is not advisable. This can only help trigger your myopia and develop serious complications with your vision at an early age. Children who suffer from myopia have difficulties reading the blackboard.
People who spend hours glued to their laptop screens pose a risk to their health and stand a high chance of acquiring myopia. Besides distant objects appearing blurry, these are some of the common symptoms of myopia.

Myopia can be corrected by your doctor. You will first have to undergo an eye exam. This will determine how far gone your eyesight has been affected. If your results indicate a negative number, then it becomes evident you are suffering form myopia.
At this point, your doctor will suggest prescription glasses, contacts or eye surgery. The greater the negative number, the stronger the lens on your glasses or contacts will have to be.
#3. Damage to reproductive organs
All laptops operate by emitting heat. This heat has a direct health consequence to you as a laptop user. For men, long term use of laptops when placed on the laps has been associated with sterilization. Recent studies indicate that the heat from the laptop causes sperm mortality which may eventually lead to low sperm countdown. Sperms mortality is achieved by the thermal effect which heats up the scrotum when the laptop is placed on the lap for greater periods.
Women are not safe either, especially pregnant women. Women who expose their unborn babies to such conditions risk giving birth to off-springs who may later suffer from development problems. Laptops emit electromagnetic frequency (EMF) radiation which is quite harmful if we are exposed to it for longer periods.
Pregnant women should, therefore, stay clear form devices that emit radiation.
This is a matter of discipline. Never use your laptop on your lap if you know what is good for you and what is good for the healthy development of your off-springs.
